How many days old should my baby be for a photoshoot?

The best time to have a newborn photoshoot is typically within the first 2 weeks of life, often between 5-10 days old. During this window, babies are generally sleepier, more flexible, and easier to pose, which helps capture those adorable curled-up, peaceful shots. Their skin also tends to be clearer, and they're still adjusting to life outside the womb, which often makes them more calm.

If you miss the 2-week window, you can still have a great photoshoot later, but it might be a little trickier to get the same kind of posed shots, as babies tend to be more awake and active after the first month. Some parents choose to schedule shoots between 1-2 months of age to capture more alert expressions and interactions, especially if they prefer photos of their baby with their eyes open.

In summary:

-
Ideal time: 5-10 days old (for posed, sleepy shots)
-
Alternative time: 1-2 months old (for more interactive, awake shots)

Just be sure to schedule the session in advance, as my diary gets booked very quickly!

Session Timing: My newborn photography sessions are completely led by baby. We take time to allow for feeding, nappy changes and cuddles to ensure that baby is always happy and content throughout. I always allow up to 2 hours. It's important to me that we spend the right amount of time to capture all of those dreamy newborn images, so its important to be flexible and more importantly... relaxed!
